Prototype Schools and Tutoring: Parents' Views. The case of the Evangelical School
Summary:
The present study aims to explore the reasons that lead parents to choose a Prototype Public Secondary School, namely the Evangelical School in Nea Smyrni, to continue their children's education. Students are admitted to the school after written examinations. A semi-structured interview tool was designed to investigate this issue, involving twenty-four parents living in areas of Athens. This is a qualitative study, which utilizes data from 16 interviews. After transcribing them, the data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Initially, it was found that the phenomenon of shadow education is present even in a young student population, as parents provide at least six months of extracurricular assistance to their children. The financial burden on families has shown to be at low and medium cost levels. It also appeared that a small number of students were making an individual effort to prepare for themselves for these examinations. The most important reason for parents to prepare their children is to familiarize themselves with the topics of the Evangelical School exams.
Additional reasons for this decision are the child's potential learning gaps, as well as the inability of the education system itself to provide students with the appropriate qualifications. Parents believe that a Prototype School's environment, homogeneity in students' cognitive level, and adequate teacher training will lead to high educational performance. A significant finding is the desire of the children themselves to attend a more efficient school and even though they have not settled on the profession they will pursue. Parents, on the other hand, do not want to interfere with their children's professional careers, as long as they choose to make good money. Finally, their children's failure in entrance exams does not affect their learning, but is considered a vital experience in their educational resume.
