Summary:
The use of mobile devices, such as mobile phones and tablets, in the field of education has attracted the interest of modern researchers. At the same time, the field of Augmented Reality research is expanding, as it has emerged as a technology capable of bringing many benefits to teaching and learning. Also, over the last few years, the field of Augmented Reality research is expanding, as it has emerged as a technology capable of bringing many benefits to teaching and learning. In recent years, the trend of escape rooms has also flourished, and by integrating them into the educational process, they have become capable of being a great tool for teaching and learning. However, the number of studies about mobile games using augmented reality in primary education in Greece is extremely limited, with only a few being in the form of an escape room. In this context, the present project, adopting the research methodology based on planning, aims to design, develop, and evaluate a portable augmented reality game in the form of an escape room for primary school students. The game that was created is based on the elementary school curriculum and focuses on the subject of History, because studies show that students have difficulties in this lesson and new technologies are reinforcing its teaching. The app created with the Actionbound platform engages students in an escape game in which they are called upon to save History by a scientist who wants to change it. Players are challenged to solve puzzles cooperatively, and by using augmentations from the Blippar application, they receive new coded elements that help them achieve their goal. This game was evaluated by 30 Primary Teachers for its ease of use, pedagogical content and player experience. Finally, the results show that "Save the History" is a handy educational tool that fully meets the needs of sixth grade students, providing them a constructive and fun experience.
