Creating and implementing rubrics for assessing projects and the cultivation of 21st century skills
Summary:
In this study, the components of modern learning and teaching are studied in real school conditions. The introduction of creative projects in the 1st and 2nd grade of high school is aiming to turn teaching methods into forms of authentic learning. However, in order to measure the expected results and evaluate the students' work produced, a new assessment tool needs to be developed. That has to be a construction that has the scientific validity and practicality to feedback the process of applying creative projects. In order to the tool to be effective, it is necessary to include the specific criteria that link assessment to learning objectives. The main aim of the creative projects and the authentic learning techniques is the development of the 21st century skills in the modern learning communities. The thematic and complex task scenarios are commensurate with the modern educational level, but lack new quality tools that will disrupt the process for the already multi-faceted role of the teacher. To highlight the benefits of the work themselves, an evaluation tool is being constructed, a detailed scale of scheduled criteria. It is an original, complex rubric of indices and qualitative description criteria based on the most modern research on the categorization and cultivation of skills of the 21st century. Using the evaluation rubric, the project method in the form of cross-cutting, creative work is analyzed and highlighted. This tool works on EXCEL processing sheets and automatically quantifies the gradient of the criteria, and automatically completes the final descriptive evaluation. It has a modern pedagogical scientific approach and flexibility, which gives impetus to creative projects in school.
For these reasons, an action research was planned with a new, alternative assessment tool designed. Its construction was made in March-April 2018 for the evaluation needs of creative projects in the A and B classes of the Prototype General Lyceum of Varvakeio School. The pilot tool was used by the teachers in the second semester of the school year 2017-2018 and was repeated in the second semester of the school year 2018-2019. In the end of scholar year 2018-2019 the qualitative approach was used through the technique of structured interview of the teachers as an observation tool. A conversation and observation took place concerning the use and interpretation of teachers, the appreciation of students and the operational points that improve educational work. The data triangulation of the interviews was processed through Nvivo 12 software, in order to control the thematic categories that occurred from the interviews and the correlation with the research questions. The results showed that the new rubric was preferred amongst teachers as a suitable evaluation technique, thanks to clarity and analysis, under the authority of the university research community, because it provided security and guarantee. The automation of the board gave quick and clear results to teachers, as well as a direct basis for reporting their actions. The penetration of the individual aspects of the creative work and the highlighting of the strong and weak components of the project give a direct and centralized image to both the teacher and the students. It is also a common place of reference for all teachers to whom they can turn to study their comparative results. Thus, the teacher's work is strengthened and the student's final assessment feeds the cultivation of skills of the 21st century. This detailed evaluation rubric is an innovation for the modern Greek school and can contribute to the promotion of the use of creative work and their formative character.
