Alternative types of tourism - Case study : Wine tourism in Mantineia
Summary:
Tourism as a recognizable economic, social and cultural phenomenon originally appeared after the end of World War II hostilities. In our days, on a global level, the tourist industry comprises an industry of paramount importance worldwide. As a branch of economic activity, it undoubtedly comprises a significant factor of financial reinforcement. Therefore, its contribution to the social and cultural advancement of a country on a local, regional and national level can be easily inferred.
Greek tourism is nowadays one of the scarce sectors of national economy that is acknowledged as being competitive on a global basis. The evaluation of the role and of the contribution of tourism to national economy is closely connected to its immediate monetary contribution. Nonetheless, one should co-evaluate the collateral and multi-dimensional contribution of tourism by means of interconnections developed among all the trades involved in the tourist industry.
The writing of this dissertation will be conducted in a framework of study aiming at the investigation of alternative types of tourism, studying mainly the wine tourism in the vineyard-winery region of Mantineia in Arcadia.
First and foremost, an attempt will be made to comprehend the concept of tourism and its contribution to the development of Greek economy. We will approach the conceptual dimension of the main types of alternative tourism, as they appear in Greece. We will deal with the contribution of alternative tourism to the local and regional viable and sustainable development as well as to the elongation of touristic season.
Moreover, besides the conceptual approach of wine tourism, we will present the position the latter occupies in contemporary Greece. Wine tourism as an upcoming activity can play an important role in the local and regional development, in employment prospects for the inhabitants of regions which are far from the metropolis and in the advancement of enterprises and investments.
The development of wine tourism products in the region of Mantineia in Arcadia will be investigated along with the cultivation of moschofilero as a sole variation, which constitutes an attraction for the vineyard- winery regions.
The methodology applied to the writing of this thesis includes an overview of bibliographical references, studies, statistics and articles found on the Internet as well as on –the-spot visits at the wineries (wine-producing enterprises) of the region under survey.
