Roma Inclusion and Education: A Biographical Narrative Approach to Roma People Who Have Deleted a Successful School - School Path.
Summary:
Social and educational exclusion are situations that characterize vulnerable social groups, including the Roma, as a special group of disadvantaged people with regard to their social integration. Recognizing the very close relationship between educational and social exclusion as well as the way these two situations work, there have been numerous quantitative and qualitative content studies that attempt to present, analyze and explain the causes of educational exclusion and school failure of Roma students based on specific sociological theories and suggest solutions and good practices that can contribute to school 'success' of these students.
It is precisely this school 'success' that is found among very few Roma pupils that formed the starting point for this work. In particular, it was considered that it would be of particular interest to examine the lived experiences of Roma people who belong to this very small proportion who have pursued post-secondary education, entered higher education and / or have already graduated from it. Especially which factors helped to have a 'successful' educational path and link it to social inclusion and / or social exclusion.
Because of its ability to investigate qualitative characteristics, emotions and sociological material, the biographical narrative approach was selected as an appropriate research option and therefore biographical narrative interviews were conducted on a sample selected using the purposive sampling method. In the context of analyzing the data collected, a multilevel process was followed, including the steps proposed by Schutze (1984) and Tsiolis (2006) for the analysis of biographical texts.
The above research leaded to important conclusions, which confirm the findings of relevant research on the difficulties faced by Roma students in their educational and social integration due to the typical cultural, educational, economic and social characteristics that characterize them, their families and their identities. However, recognize to individuals a more autonomous action based on their own intentions, personal motivations, character, etc.
