Summary:
Aim: Mobbing syndrome is mostly known because of the consequences that causes to the health and safety of the workers and to the productivity of organizations. The aim of the present study is to measure the prevalence of mobbing among healthcare professionals working in a public hospital.
Methods: The population of the study consisted of 158 healthcare professionals working in a public hospital in Athens. For the purpose of this study the Leymann’s Inventory of Psychological Terrorization Questionnaire was used. For the statistical analysis the SPSS package (version 22.0) was used. All categorical variables expressed as frequencies and percentages. The level of statistical significance was defined as a=0,05.
Results: The majority of the participants were female nurses (78,5%).The mean age of the participants was 29 years and the prevalence of mobbing was 0,57% . The most common mobbing behavior identified in the study were “you have been silenced” (30,4%) and “you have been assigned tasks lower your ability” (45,6%). From those who have been mobbed, 24,7% discussed it with a friend or family member and 22,8% with another colleague. The majority of the participants (74,1%) stated that they had witnessed mobbing behaviors against another colleague.
Conclusion: Mobbing syndrome is a work related phenomenon which affects the employees and the organization in multiple ways. The introduction of tailored training of the managerial staff and the employees is important for the prevention and also the early detection of mobbing behaviors so as to avoid the negative consequences of the phenomenon.
