Comparative Approach To The English and The Greek Version Of The Treaty On The European Union: Translation And Terminology Issues
Summary:
The subject of this dissertation is the co-examination and comparison of the English and Greek versions of the Treaty on European Union, which was signed in 1992 and launched a new phase in the evolution of the EU as we currently know it. On the basis of the text to be discussed, we start by revisiting the evolutionary course of the EU and its main institutions, while in a second phase the main features of the languages for specific purposes are examined, in particular those pertaining to the legal language and terminology in both the English and Greek languages. Special emphasis is placed on the so-called Eurolect, as well as on the differences that the latter features in comparison with the national legal languages under consideration (namely English and Greek). The co-examination of the two language versions will focus on identifying translation errors in the field of legal language, legal terminology, grammatical and editorial rules in Greek, while proposing appropriate corrections for every translation error identified. The aim of this work is to draw conclusions on translation quality, to highlight the reasons for such translation errors, and to confirm or not the presence of specific features within the EU legal language.
