Summary:
The school of today has the duty to prepare its students to become thinking citizens
of tomorrow, able to form their own opinion on the current situation, care about the
quality of the environment and the use of natural resources and also tackle issues of
quality of life and social justice. This dissertation aims to comparatively study the link
between the idea of ‘sustainable school’ and ‘Waldorf pedagogy’ seeking similarities
between them. A combination of methods was used. First, a comparative literarture
analysis was carried out followed by a qualitative small scale study. The qualitative
research was conducted in a Greek primary school that implements the Waldorf
pedagogy, through semi-structured interviews and data were analysed with the use of
thematic analysis. The sample involves 4 educators, two of whom are also school
administrative staff. According to the study findings, the school has more similarities
to the ‘sustainable school’ on the pedagogical and the social level and fewer on the
technical/environmental level. The educators stress the necessity, especially in our
times, to focus on the holistic development of the child in a sustainable manner. It is
suggested that the connection with the environment shoud be promoted as this will
lead to a more complete development of an individual’s personality.
