Summary:
The present dissertation is concerned with geology didactics in Secondary education and in particular how to best incorporate field trips in the teaching process. The research was conducted in three separate parts, each one designed uniquely, aiming at different goals.
During the first stage a cross sectional survey design was employed to reach the target population of high school teachers that taught the subject of Geology – Geography during the year 2015-16. In order to conduct the survey, Google forms were utilized to compile the questionnaires which were distributed to the schools through the Directorates of Secondary Education. The goal was to report the current techniques used to teach Geology and the educators’ view on field trips and their effectiveness.
Experiment research of mixed methods was conducted during the second stage. The subjects of the research were students of six different high schools of Attica who took pretests and posttests, before and after visiting the field, and their teachers who accompanied them and acted as observers. The field trips took place at the Sousaki volcano and at Karpenisi. The quantitative research aimed at measuring the effect of the teaching interventions on students’ knowledge and the qualitative research targeted at reporting how students experienced the whole outing by conducting open interviews with the chaperone teachers. There was an experimental group and a control group among the students and the data obtained were statistically processed.
During the last stage of the research, Augmented Reality techniques were employed so as to supplement the field trip guides with AR activities. A group of students were then taken to the Sousaki volcano where they were engaged in multiple activities that used this kind of technology and were then asked to evaluate their experience.
The results we obtained throughout the research led to multiple conclusions regarding field trips. Teachers regard filed trips as valuable end effective teaching techniques but do not use them often. The students improved their knowledge on geological concepts after their visit to these fields, with the experimental group achieving higher scores. Last but not least, the evaluations on the use of AR activities during a field trip were positive and this technology looks very promising when it comes to educating high school students.
