Summary:
The purpose of this study is to report, analyze and explain the errors, which inevitably occur to students who have the Greek language as their mother tongue and as second / foreign language. The research data come from written productions of native and non-native speakers of medium/ high level of proficiency in language and examine linguistic errors by types and categories. The Chi-Square test (χ2) is used to compare the results and find the statistically significant difference between the two language groups. At the same time, the issue of the emergence and influence of the first language (L1) of non-native speakers on their learning evolution towards the target language (L2) is investigated.
It is found that the most problematic areas in the interlanguage for both native and non-native Greek learners are errors made in punctuation, spelling, and stress, which is confirmed by previous research as well as at textual level. The difference between the two groups is not qualitative but quantitative. Finally, developmental errors are more common in non-native speakers and there is still interference from the mother tongue.
