Assessing the written work of non-native speakers of Greek: critical review and teaching proposals
Summary:
Τhis study examines the assessment of the written work of Greek L2 students. First, the theoretical part presents the concepts of assessment and feedback as the main purpose of the assessment of writing. Forms of feedback and, especially, written corrective feedback strategies are described. Criteria for effective feedback are cited, based on the review of L2 feedback literature. The research examines the feedback practices used by teachers of Modern Greek Language Teaching Center of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens through a) their students’ writings and b) teacher and student interviews. The results suggest teachers’ preference in unfocused, direct corrective feedback with written end comments that function mostly as praise. Finally, ways for enriching teacher feedback strategies are proposed.
