Literature, cinema and literacy: William Joyce, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Teaching Approach and Implementation in Primary School
Summary:
The present study explores the value that cinema projection can provide as a teaching
tool in the context of cinema literacy and educational practice. Given that students'
interest in learning through traditional teaching is quite often diminished, the ultimate
goal is to identify ways to foster and cultivate student literacy. To this end, an
alternative teaching approach is chosen as reference that can cause positive emotions
in students. This is based on reading the book and screening the homonymous shortduration
animation film, entitled: "William Joyce, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr.
Morris Lessmore". At first, a literature review is performed in respect to the effects of
animation on the general population and childhood, the relationship between cinema
and literature, as well as the value of cinema as a teaching practice through the
animation technique. Subsequently, a multi-stage lesson plan is designed and
developed, based on reading the book, analysis of its meanings, screening the film and
a comparative assessment of the two media. In the framework of this pilot teaching
proposal, a multitude of exercises and related activities is formulated. The conclusions
of the present study can be a lever for further efforts to integrate literacy techniques into
the ordinary educational process.
