Primary Education Teachers' Views on the Relationship of Values and Democracy to Education for Sustainable Development
Summary:
This postgraduate thesis addresses the ambiguous relationship between democracy and values in education as one of the biggest challenges for Environmental Education and Sustainable Development education. The democratic problem of education, which is understood as a paradox between the dual purpose of education: on the one hand, to form autonomous and free-thinking students, and on the other, at the same time to impart specific moral values.
The survey, conducted by a sample of 12 Primary Education teachers who teach in public elementary schools in Athens, addresses the democratic paradox. More specifically, they attempt to analyze the themes: values, democratic education, self-discipline, methodologies, environmental education techniques and activities, the challenges that teachers face. The tool used for recording and analyzing the results was personal interviews. The time for the interviews was between early October and early November 2019.
The results of the survey show confusion over issues of values and democracy. The democratic paradox is also a reality in the Greek education system. The majority of teachers cite the great difficulty they face when applying democratic and participatory processes to the current closed and inelastic Greek education system. It also mentions the obstacles and difficulties it has to face in everyday practice that are a hindrance to the implementation of Environmental Education and Sustainable Development programmes.
