Anatomical study of the role of the symbolic system in the interpretation of the eye in HORNER syndrome in human crown material
Summary:
In the present research article, the role of sympathetic innervation to the etiopathogeny of Horner’s syndrome was studied, as well as its symptomatology. The material of this study originated from:
a) The cadaveric material used for the anatomical study of the human body, by the second-year students of the University of Athens Medical School.
b) The patients of the Athens Eye Hospital, who underwent infiltration of the sympathetic ganglion of their eye.
In total, 25 human corpses (15 men and 10 women) and 14 patients of the Athens Eye Hospital (8 men and 6 women), who underwent infiltration of the sympathetic ganglion of their eye, were used in this study.
Research study of the present doctoral dissertation, apart from the sympathetic innervation study and correlation with Homer’s syndrome pathogenesis, included a study of the material examined in three age periods: 20-40 years old, 40-60 years old, 60-80 years old.
Regarding the study method, a bilateral receiving of the sympathetic ganglion was conducted, taken from the available cadaveric material. After its photography, each ganglion was sent to the Pathological Anatomy laboratory of the Henry Dunant Hospital for histologic and pathologoanatomic examination. Then, the data found on the above study were registered and assessed after direct correlation to the histopathological findings, taken from the patients who underwent infiltration of the sympathetic ocular ganglion, in order to verify the correlation grade of the sympathetic innervation and Horner’s syndrome.
