The mystery of Baptism in the Church of Antioch
Summary:
In our thesis we studied the texts of four Syrian sources in an attempt to reconstruct and record the ritual of the mystery of Baptism in the region of Antioch. It is about the texts of the Apostolic Constitutions, the Catechetic Homilies of saint John Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia and the text about The Ecclesiastical Hierarchy" that is attributed to Dionysius The Areopagite.
Except the text "About the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy”, in which the author doesn’t mention anything about the teaching, the rest of the sources mention the teaching where they distinguish two periods: the pre-baptismal and the meta-baptismal and in two stages, the teaching stage and the ritualistic stage. The latter happened in the period of the great Lent. Back then, the Catechumens that were eligible and chosen for the Baptism were to reach the last phase and were enlisted in the catalogue of the illuminated.
Over the period of the Great Lent after the daily teaching of the illuminated, the exorcism followed and was performed by a special group of exorcists where the devil was cast out and away from the candidate. The ceremonies of Baptism, according to our sources, used to begin with the rejection of Satan by the illuminated and his acceptance of Christ. The confession of the faith followed the acceptance of Christ.
The pre-baptismal Chrismation was of two stages: a. The chrismation of the forehead of the baptized by a priest or a bishop in a crosswise movement with the sanctified oil and b. the oil anointment of the whole body by deacons. This was followed by the three-time immersion and ascension of the baptized in the holy water.
The meta-baptismal rituals were composed of getting the baptized dressed, the prayer, the meta-baptismal chrism, the kiss and the connection of the mystery of baptism with the holy Eucharist. The sources don't mention anything about hair cutting. the meta-baptismal chrismation is testified in all the sources except those of the saint john the Chrysostom. After the completion of the mystery, the Neophytes (Newly Baptized) enter the temple with the bishop and the priests with lit candles to participate in the Holy Liturgy.
With no doubt many are the informations that we learned from the sources where some coincide, others differ from one another and others work as additional and complete the missing dots.
