Instagram, Loneliness and Adolescents' Fear of Missing Out
Summary:
This study investigates adolescents’ use of Instagram in Greece and how it is related to peer and family self-reported loneliness, as well as their Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). The sample consisted of 109 middle school students, 13-15 years old. The adolescents completed a series of translated questionnaires in Greek regarding Instagram. Questions were focused on their motivation (Young, Len-Ríos & Young, 2017˙ Lee, Lee, Moon & Sung, 2015), activities (Yang & Lee, 2018) and misuse of Instagram (Balta, Emirtekin, Kircaburun & Griffiths, 2018), as well as their Fear of Missing Out (Przybylski, Murayama, DeHaan & Gladwell, 2013). The "Relationship Providence Loneliness Questionnaire (RPLQ)" (Hayden, 1989) was administered to assess loneliness levels. Misuse of Instagram seems to be predicted by self-expression motivation, daily preoccupation, surveillance motivation, and adolescents' Fear of Missing Out. Furthermore, significant findings have emerged concerning the relationship between loneliness, the fear of teens being left out and Instagram use. Research limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.
