Ηοtspot Skaramanga: A Case Study on Refugee Education in 2016-2017
Summary:
The research examines the context around the refugee education program in its first year of operation. The refugee crisis that began in 2015 and the number of refugee children who were violated their rights were the reason for this investigation. Investigating the pedagogical process implemented is important for highlighting the problems that are being sought for solutions, as well as for the good practical and positive elements of the educational and social integration of refugee students.
The research specifically deals with the study of the Refugee Education Program for Refu-gee Students from the Skaramanga Hospitality Structure in Attica and a survey of the organization of the structure. The sample involved active members of the refugee education program who worked in the first year of the program, in DYEP with refugee pupils from the Skaramanga host structure.
The results of the survey conclude that it was positive for refugees who came out of the confined structure and participated in the school institution. Their continued stay at the hospitality center has a negative impact on their mental health and normal development as children. Despite the difficulties and problems that hampered the educational process, significant learning outcomes were achieved and core skills of these children were strengthened. At the same time, there has been an ineffectiveness in their integration into the mainstream school and the wider society.
Finally, it is necessary to create new educational materials suitable for teaching Greek as a foreign language and to train teachers in intercultural education.
