Cultural and religious diversity in religious education curriculums of Secondary Education
Summary:
The planning of religious education often provokes a plethora of pedagogical and political debates, while modifications to the curriculum are at the center of it. Greek religious education traditionally rests on the ideal of the "Greek-Orthodox" identity, which is at odds with the contemporary pluralistic school reality. Due to the substantial immigration and refugee influx of recent years, the country's cultural profile has been shaped in a way that undoubtedly affects the apparent homogeneity of the classroom. The effort to investigate the presence and management of diversity in curricula of religious education was the factor that contributed to the composition of the present qualitative research study. The content analysis of the secondary education curriculum was developed in contrast to the corresponding curriculum of religious education in England. This choice was made on the basis of the multicultural and multi-religious character of this country, and in order to highlight the differences in the structure and purpose of the two countries' curricula. The importance and role of the lesson in the context of education is examined, as well as its contribution to shaping students' identity, promoting different cultural/religious elements, cultivating universal values, in addition to accepting and respecting diversity.
