Functional upgrade of the LcL web-based Learning Environment and its use in the "Introduction to Computer Science and Telecommunications" course
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is the implementation of a revised version of
the LcL environment (Learner centered Learning - lcl.di.uoa.gr) and its
use in the context of the undergraduate course "Introduction to Computer
Science and Telecommunications" at the Department of Informatics and
Telecommunications, at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
(NKUA), in order to enhance the learning process. A beta version was
used and evaluated in the academic year 2018-2019. The evaluation
revealed a number of malfunctions and deficiencies that were examined,
revised and extended in the context of the current thesis.
The course is taught in the winter semester of the academic year. It is
mainly addressed to first year students, but is also attended by
advanced students. Teaching is done through lectures and the e-class
platform (https://eclass.uoa.gr/courses/D253)[5] is used for the
provision of educational material, the communication among teachers and
students and the support of students on various topics.
The LcL environment is used by students in order to elaborate activities
that give them the chance to practice and better understand the newly
taught concepts. In the context of the thesis various revisions were
made in the educational content. While completing the LcL activities,
feedback based on their performance, is given through the "Learner
Model" in the form of visualized indexes.
The use of the LcL environment in the context of the course revealed
that a significant percentage of the students had a score over the basis
while the 27% of them scored over the 90% of the total score of the
course. As far as the accessibility and views of the feedback units is
concerned, the students behaved as expected.
