Summary:
One of the most crucial issues, that adolescents have been faced nowadays is the the feeling of loneliness. This feeling, most of times has been resulting by the rejection of peers, or of the many conflicts with their parents. Loneliness has negative effects on adolescents’ mental health and behaviours. For this reason, it is very important to enhance resilisience. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of resilience in the feeling of loneliness in a sample of adolescent students and to analyse the relationship between loneliness and adolescents’ resilience. The sample of the survey was 310 students, attending classrooms of High School, from Galatsi, Kypseli, Anixis, Piraeus and Koridalos areas. Students completed two scales of loneliness UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version3) and resilience of Neill & Dias, (2001). The results of the present study reveals a moderate degree of association between loneliness and resilence in the participants of the sample. Also, there are differences in levels of loneliness, accordingly gender and the level of resilence each student. No diffences were found in levels of loneliness in marital status and overall students performance. Finally, The relationship between loneliness and resilience was confirmed by the results of hierarchical linear regression, which showed that resilience explained about 14,4% of the variance in loneliness. Based on these results, it is recommended to reinforce resilience in schools through prevention and intervention programs, which aimed at eradicating the level of loneliness and enhancing and promoting mental health for all students.
