Natural Disasters and Psychosocial Impacts on Children
Summary:
The present work deals with highlighting and recording the psychosocial effects of natural disasters, in a particularly vulnerable population, on children. This population group has particular characteristics, mainly due to its age and its immediate dependence on the guardians. Children are not provided with the necessary skills and knowledge, that will enable them to protect themselves, against uncontrolled situations following a big natural disaster.
The incidence of extreme natural phenomena, which cause natural disasters and crises, has been increasing in recent years, most likely as a result of climate change, changing the living conditions of an increasing number of children. The lack of family and social balance, which follows the onset of physical phenomena, with the simultaneous lack of supportive social systems combined with the personality traits of children, directly affects their mental resilience.
The protective factors that children had developed before the onset of natural disasters, at the level of the individual, of their family and of their home environment, after the disasters changed, affecting directly their psychological function. One percentage of children returns to previous level of mental health, while another percentage develops chronic symptoms and severe behavioral disorders.
For this reason, developed countries must focus their efforts during the pre-disaster period on proper preparation so that, during the recovery period following a natural disaster, early diagnosis and management of children’s behaviors and reactions related with mental trauma can be managed.
The present thesis, finally, focuses on the analysis of past events in which a large number of children were called upon after a major natural disaster to deal with a series of traumatic events that had a major impact on their psychosocial functioning in combination with cultural and social factor parameters.
The methodological tools used in the design of the study are the bibliographic review and the extraction of valid and cross-referenced data from the Internet.
