Summary:
The aim of this research is to investigate the ways queer texts and identity are shaped and affected by translating forces as encountered in the spectrum of the Greek publishing field. Taking W. S. Burroughs’ novel Queer (written in 1952 and published in 1985) into consideration, along with its 1998 and 2011 Greek translations, this research is based on tracing the ways translation reshapes the original queer characters through a variety of means. In its turn, this type of reshaping might also indicate the disposition of the publisher and the translator towards queer affairs. Through an investigation of qualitative data (as produced by bibliographical research and through the interview with the translator of the 2011 Greek version) this paper will first attempt to trace the historical and sociopolitical background of queer communities from their American origins to their contemporary global formations. Then, the focus will shift to the Greek context which seems to remain rather conservative towards LGBTQ+ matters. Finally, this conservative quality of the Greek society could be considered as a strong indicator of the needs of the reading audience that wishes to have its values and stereotypes reproduced through translation, thus affecting the liberties of translators and publishers, as well as the final translated product.
