Summary:
Theoretical background. The teaching profession is considered one of the most stressful and burnout, which is the result of chronic stress unsuccessful treatment, is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal achievement, with many effects on an individual, interpersonal and organizational level.
Methodological approach. In the present research study, which involved 123 secondary school teachers in D' Athens, the Demographic Data Questionnaire (Mouzoura, 2005), the Emotional Tension Source Questionnaire (Mouzoura, 2005) and the Maslach Burnout Ιnventory for educators (Maslach & Jackson, 1986, op. cit. in Mouzoura, 2005) were used, in order to collect the data, while the statistical analysis done through SPSS 20.0.
Research findings. The first three sources of stress for teachers of the sample are insufficient wages, lack of support from experts and lack of interest and motivation from students along with changes in educational policy. These teachers experience moderate levels of stress in each factor resulting from the factor analysis, while, in terms of the dimensions of burnout, they experience moderate levels of emotional exhaustion, low levels of depersonalization and moderate levels of personal achievement. In addition, all stress factors are related to emotional exhaustion and some of them (issues related to lack of time and workload, issues related to material and human resources, issues related to management) can predict it.
General conclusions. The most serious sources of stress for teachers of the sample stem from modern social and economic conditions, the nature of the profession and the structure of the education system. Recognizing them early and finding the causal relationship between stress and burnout can help those involved designing interventions to reduce stress and avoid burnout.
