Quality of life in patients with Heart Failure
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for a high mortality rate worldwide. Heart Failure is a complex clinical syndrome which induces serious consequences in both physical and mental health. New therapies have led to new programs, which aim not only at relieving symptoms, improving prognosis and functional ability, but also attaining better quality of life.
PURPOSE: of this study was to investigate into quality of life in heart failure patients, after hospitalization due to deregulation of their disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample of the study consisted of 90 patients with chronic heart failure who had been hospitalized due to deregulation of their disease. Data was collected by the patients’ completion of the Minnesota scale, to investigate into the quality of life. Statistical analysis was performed with the statistical package SPSS and the statistical methods t – test and ANOVA.
RESULTS: From the 90 patients with heart failure in our study, 60% were men and 40% women. Average age was 77 years old. The mean +/- standard deviation of the total score of the scale Minnesota was 53,8 +/- 13,5 in 6 months after hospitalization, 57,9 +/- 14,5 in 1 year and 64,6 +/- 15,5 in 2 years. Respecting ejection fraction, ANOVA control showed statistical significance in 1 out of 3 variables, in MLHFQ_2years (p=0,049), with average 61,83. Concerning NYHA classification, analysis displayed statistical significance in 3 variables of MLHFQ (p<0,005).
CONCLUSIONS: Heart Failure affects several domains of patients’ health in many ways, especially daily routine and quality of life. Programming holistic care and treatment will improve patients’ survival in total.
