Numismatic testimonies during the Genoese period. The case of Lesvos during the Gattilusi rule (1355-1462)
Summary:
The establishment of the Gattilusi rule (1355-1462) in Mytilene in 1355 was almost sudden as a result of the kinship ties acquired by Francis I (1355-1384) who married the sister of the Byzantine emperor, John V Palaiologos in return for the former’s help in the recovery of the empire’s throne. Thus, the Gattilusi, a gentile family of merchants and pirates were called, without any previous experience, to organize the government of a Greek island, that is a population with a different language, religion, traditions and customs from their own. The present thesis deals with key values of the monetary circulation in Lesbos during the Gattilusi period in connection with the examination of key aspects of the economic life of the island that appears flourishing even shortly before its conquest by the Ottomans. And all this effort was based on the study of primary monetary material and the processing, correlation and appropriate utilization of information and disseminated data through primary sources –notarial documents, chronicles, travel impressions, rough memoirs.
