Summary:
In this study it is investigated, from the point of view both of teachers and principals, if, and to what extent, principals use transformational leadership and if they have emotional intelligence skills. It is also investigated if principals who have characteristics of emotional intelligence use transformational leadership at the same time.
At this survey 30 principals and 100 teachers, who work at primary schools of north suburbs in Athens, participated. Teachers had to fill in a questionnaire about the emotional intelligence’s characteristics as well as the transformational leadership’s skills of their principals. Similar questionnaires had to be filled in by the principals about themselves.
The results of the teacher’s questionnaires reveal that their principals have emotional intelligence and use transformational leadership to a great extent. Concerning emotional intelligence, almost all the principals’ answers were positive at the maximum level while concerning transformational leadership their answers were very positive. It was also calculated the correlation coefficient between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership. Based on the teachers’ answers the correlation coefficient was very high (r=0.829) which means very strong correlation between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership. Based on principals’ answers the correlation coefficient was lower (r=0.631) which means that there is positive correlation but in lower level. The reason for this result is that principals answered more positive about their emotional intelligence’s characteristics than their transformational leadership’s skills.
