The wealth-producing resources of Laconia
Summary:
This dissertation deals with the wealth-producing resources of Laconia. Laconia was called the territorial area that was subject at any time to the domination of the Lacedaemonians from the middle of the 8th century B.C. Undoubtedly, the wealth-producing resources of an area influenced the economic, social and political organization of its inhabitants. But what exactly do we mean by wealth-producing sources? Those were the goods which were produced by the land, especially the plants thrived in it and the animals bred and lived on land, rivers and the sea, from which our study area was surrounded. In the above context, of course, we could not omit to mention the metals and rocks of the area that were useful materials for the life of its inhabitants, but also products of commercial activity.

Although the wealth-producing resources of an area affected the lives of its inhabitants, there is no ancient treatise that refers exclusively to them, so I drew data on this particular subject of study from extracts from the ancient literature, as well as from archaeological finds (coins, inscriptions, archeological monuments). This dissertation is organized thematically as follows: First an attempt is made to define the area which is called Laconia, then references are made to the organization of its inhabitants, the climatic conditions that prevailed in the study area and its geography. This is followed by references to the economic resources of Laconia through the discourses of ancient personalities and the works of ancient writers. Afterward the flora of Messenia and Lacedaemon and then the fauna of these areas are analyzed. In addition, the production of metals and rocks (marbles) of Laconia is being investigated.
