Differentiated teaching in elementary school : Aspects and effectiveness in classroom
Summary:
Teaching is a field of teaching and its main object is the transmission of knowledge, feelings and skills to the student through the teacher. The teacher will organize and apply these objects based on specific goals and objectives set by the curriculum, designing a specific strategy.
Teaching is a complex and multifaceted process, which requires a lot of time to go from the beginner's stage to the experienced one. Basically, the student potential in each class consists of heterogeneous groups in relation to the cognitive, family background, etc. (mixed skills classes), where they invite and challenge the teacher to harmonize his teaching with the different characteristics of his students, concerns the method, the tools it uses and the pace of teaching.
Many different types of knowledge are required, including knowledge of the subject matter, pedagogical knowledge, and teaching skills. It is necessary for the teacher, in order to have the maximum possible learning outcomes, to identify the students who have learning difficulties or to distinguish the charismatic students and to be able to differentiate that element of teaching that is required in order to become his teaching effective.
The teacher must also have developed strategies for the design of his lesson, to be able to implement many and varied activities, differentiating them according to the needs and peculiarities of his students. Important group and individualized teaching-learning methods that work in the spirit of differentiating students in the modern school are: collaborative learning, individual teaching, individualized teaching, project method, etc.
At the same time, the pedagogical quality of the school and its effectiveness lies with its teaching staff. This is due to the fact that in terms of action, pedagogical processes are also interpersonal processes, mostly between adults and developing people. Teaching is a solitary activity, so the existence of a supportive environment and cooperation with colleagues seems to facilitate and promote reflection on educational work. The team of colleagues provides the emotional and technical support that teachers need to think about their practice. When teachers with different experiences and knowledge work together to develop different forms of teaching or review-improve existing ones, the result is clearly better.
In addition, the evaluation of both the process and the students themselves is very important for the teacher, as through it, he has the opportunity to choose the way in which he will continue to work. Through a systematic, continuous, targeted and differentiated assessment process, the teacher will be able to adapt the material, selecting appropriate teaching strategies and enriching the original learning objectives.
The application of differentiated teaching in the Greek school is considered possible and necessary due to the positive results it brings to the learning process. However, it is a challenge for teachers. Several of the factors that hinder its implementation are related to the teachers themselves, who feel insecure and lack time or have not received the proper training and education.
