Summary:
As far as, the mental and the psycho-social development of a child are concerned, many studies have indicated that the framework of a family, especially parental behavior plays a major role. The particular study aims at analyzing the relationship between parenting practices and self-esteem, as well as the student motivation, in the course of the developmental years of adolescence. The sample of the current study is composed of 111 students of the sixth (the last) grade of primary school, from three different primary schools in Athens. The tools the students were provided with, in order to facilitate the research of the study, were the following questionnaires, Rosenberg’s Self- Esteem Scale, which evaluates the self – esteem and the self – image of the students, the Academic Motivation Self- Rating Inventory, which measures the students’ motivation of school learning, the Parental Behavior questionnaire, which evaluates the five dimensional parenting styles, as it is perceived from the children, and a demographic questionnaire. The results showed a positive relevance between warmth, self- esteem and students’ motivation. Furthermore, the results of the study showed positive relations between the four negative dimensions, whereas a negative statistic difference on the levels of warmth in relation to rejection and the overprotectiveness became apparent. Finally, the negative relationship between the self- esteem and the student motivation, as far as the four negative dimensions of the Parenting Practices are concerned, has arisen from the study’s findings.
