Self-perception and overall self-esteem in relation to coping strategies in school children
Summary:
The present study investigates the degree of correlation between the areas of self-perception and overall self-esteem, in relation to coping strategies in elementary school children. The sample was 192 students from four different public schools in Athens area during the period of January 2020.The students were from 9 to 12 years old and attended the 4th, 5th and 6th grade of elementary school. The following questionnaires were used for this research Self Perception Profile for Children (1985) - ΠΑΤΕΜ II, Suzan Harter (translation - adaptation by E. Makri - Botsari, 2001), Coping Strategies Bezevegis (2001) and demographic questionnaire, which were completed by the children. The research findings showed that self-perception in the field of school ability is related to children's overall self-esteem. Also, the gender of the subjects is not related to self-esteem. However, the educational level of the father and mother is related to some areas of self-perception and overall self-esteem. In addition, it appeared that girls were more likely to choose the "Isolation - Withdrawal" strategy than boys and children with a father who had completed higher education seemed to adopt the "Review - Reconstruction" strategy more often. The most common sources of stress for children are events related to peer relationships and significant health problems. Finally, the degree of self-perception in some areas and overall self-esteem seemed to be related to the coping strategies that children choose. The present study can contribute towards the development of programs aiming to the collaboration between school and families as part of a holistic approach under the supervision of mental health professionals, on a large scale.
