Disorders of hip axis and orientation in metabolic bone diseases
Summary:
Disorders of axis and orientation of the hip have been linked to a variety of metabolic bone diseases. Osteoporotic hip fractures are associated with an increase in the length of the hip axis and an increase in the neck-shaft angle. On the other hand, osteoporotic vertebral fractures are associated with fluctuations in spinopelvic parameters. Hip osteoarthritis has been associated with increased retroversion of the femoral neck and acetabulum and increased neck-shaft angle. Coxa vara are found in Paget's bone disease and in osteogenesis imperfecta, while mixed disorders of the neck-shaft angle are found in femoral head osteonecrosis, Perthes disease, rickets and osteomalacia. Increased anteversion of the femoral head is often found in Perthes disease.
