Assessing the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the frequency and severity of Sleep Apnea Syndrome in Cyprus
Summary:
Introduction: The beneficial effect of Mediterranean Diet has been proven in prevention and treatment of Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases (1) but also in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome in combination with exercise (2) or weight loss (3). There are no studies for the potential protective role in preventive the occurrence or limiting the gravity of the syndrome.
Aim: The study aims to control the probable negative connection between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and OSAS.
Subjects and methods: By using Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) collected during the epidemiological study contacted for Sleep Apnoea Syndrome in Cyprus, adherence to the Mediterranean Diet was validated. For this purpose, we applied The Mediterranean Diet score, MD Score. MD Score has been used in a similar trial for assessing a connection between the Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular diseases (4) and can be readily derive from a FFQ. Two hundred and seventy-three FFQ were collected, validated by two independent researchers with the MD Score following nutritionist guidelines.
Results: Adherence to the MD in Cyprus was limited. Only 21,5% of the sample (59/274 individuals) had a positive for adherence index (positive MD Score when sum≥27). Statistical analysis between MD Score and Sleep Study type III results was contacted. No statistically significant differences were documented between the two groups.
Conclusion: In conclusion, MD adherence group findings concerning the prevalence and severity of OSAS was similar to the non-adherent group. Probably the positive effects lifestyle interventions to OSAS should be attributed merely to exercise and weight loss and not to the Mediterranean Diet per se. A consecutive study will attempt to investigate this assumption by quantification of each participant calories consumption.
The results of the study though congruent with a recently published Greek Study (3) need larger scale studies to support.
