Summary:
Summary
Folktale, a narrative story that revolves around the imaginary world involving a concrete meaning structured with successive motifs and repeated episodes and wood, source of life and knowledge for making are the themes presented in this master thesis. Folktales and myths, continuously changing and geared to social ethics are considered important pedagogical tools as far as holistic education is concerned. The folktale “reinforced with social, historic and poetic dynamism sets an image of man and his relationship to the world” (Meraklis, 2012: 17). The contemporary man must be an active member of social and cultural life to have his feet firmly on the values and principles which define the sense “human being” to cooperate, to accept differentiation, to be ecologically conscious, socially empathized, creative and able to come up with solutions. The fairytale is considered the ideal teaching tool that serves the aims of education for elementary students. Modern diathematic experimental practices such as group-working activities, visual material, cultivation of abilities to express personal opinion are used to approach the teaching material promoting the aim of contemporary education. The Cultural Educational Programme under the title “The woods in myths and in fairytales” was designed, put into practice and assessed for the students of the third form at the 86th Elementary School of Athens during the school year 2019-2020, aiming at familiarizing students with folktale and myth. The teaching techniques and activities for every teaching scenario are aimed at the holistic development of students’ personality, as it claimed, children who have not been brought up with fairytales might not be well-prepared to deal with the hardiness in life.
