Summary:
The present study focuses on wildfires that erupted in the Peloponnese and particularly in the district of Ilia in 2007 and 2008. It discusses the issue of wildfires and of their effect on the climate and the broader environment. A wildfire is deemed uncontrollable when it is related to local vegetation and has to be put down. It can be deemed controllable when it is limited mainly in one particular area. At the same time, its overall behaviour may facilitate to deal with its various reverberations.
The study also deals with the broader Mediterranean region, particularly during the summer period, due to the complexity of prevalent conditions, namely warm and dry periods during which wildfires multiply. In addition, and based on different scenarios, related to the overall climate change, it becomes clear that these periods will become more frequent in the near future.
From the totality of areas affected in the district of Ilia during this particular period, 75,3% is agricultural land, where olives, raisins, walnuts etc, are cultivated. Analytically, the overall percentage of destroyed acreage in total arable land for each cultivation reaches a 37,8%. Undoubtedly, the gravest consequence from large wildfires relates to the loss of human life.
