Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is the study and development of a system for data acquisition, local and remote control and management of a RES microgrid as a component of the Intelligent Power Grid based on modern communication technologies.
Renewable energy networks facilitate distributed generation and storage and increased penetration of RES and minimize transmission and distribution losses. Smart Grid technologies can optimize the operation and control of the microgrid, and contribute to the flexibility and optimal operation and energy efficiency of the new structure of the electricity grid.
The increased penetration of renewable energy into the energy mix is now one way to tackle the problems of energy scarcity and environmental burden and may be achieved by making the electricity grid more “intelligent”.
The system that was developed and is described in this current thesis performs real-time monitoring, control and management of the electrical microgrid. It collects and processes data of generation, load and grid perfomrance and informs the user (locally or remotely) through a friendly user interface.
