Summary:
The aim of this study is to investigate the technical and tactical profile of two teams of
Super League, PAOK F.C and ARIS F.C., for the 2018-2019 season, with the ultimate
goal to highlight the elements that justify the final ranking.
For this purpose, 29 matches of the Greek 2018-2019 Super League season were
analyzed. The data were collected from instatscout.com and then, recorded in the
Microsoft Excel accounting program. The statistically analyzed variables are the goals
achieved, the successful passes, lost balls, the recovery of the ball in the opponent’s
half, the access in the last third of the opponent, the set pieces and the shots. Descriptive
statistics such as frequency f & %f and mean (M) were used. Analysis of variance
(ANOVA) was used to compare the means. The significance level was set p<.05.
According to the results, PAOK F.C has better rates in goals achieved (Mean per game
2,2 over 1,4) , in successful passes (84,6% over 81,3%), in shots (Mean per game 13,2
over 12), in access in the last third of the opponent (Mean per game 47,1 over 44,7),
has lower rates in lost balls at home (Mean per game 63,4 over 69) and away from home
as well (Mean per game 66,4 over 73,3) and has received significantly fewer goals
(Mean per game 0,47 over 1,1). On the other hand, ARIS F.C. has more ball recoveries
in the opponent’s half (Mean per game 14 recoveries over 12,9), more shots from set
pieces and a higher percentage of shots from set pieces (32,7% over 30,4%).
In conclusion, the two teams demonstrate high performance rates in all variables.
Nevertheless, by comparison with ARIS F.C., PAOK F.C. has higher performance rates
in most variables and that is why the team won the 2018-2019 Super League
Championship.
