An investigation into the personal theories of high school teachers: An attempt to capture the phenomenon in comparison with their specialization.
Summary:
Several researchers have pointed out that teaching practices of educators applied in the everyday
dilemmas in class reflect mostly personal beliefs, perceptions, attitudes along with pre-constructed
knowledge schemas regarding teaching and learning of the educators themselves. Understanding,
therefore, this complicated phenomenon of teaching requires going beyond the bounds set by scientific
pedagogical theories on the process of learning and teaching, and the specification of the particular
mixture of experience and knowledge of educators, which has been formed from an early stage and
comprises their personal theory. Main target of the present thesis is the tracing and delineation of the
personal theory of teaching, fundamental parts of which are the alternative kinds of knowledge and their
multi-faceted professional identity. To achieve the targets of the present thesis, we have conducted a
quantitative analysis by means of a questionnaire oriented towards tracing the personal theories of
educators. The purpose is on the one hand to specify the personal practices and teaching approaches of
educators and on the other hand to synthesize a practical definition of personal theory. The results of the
analysis shows that the professional identity of the educator depends to a larger extent on the culture and
the classroom ecosystem and to a lesser degree on the typical characteristics of educators, such their
gender, their specialization and their years of service. The crystallized cognitive schemas, the personal
theories and their world view can possibly determine their teaching practices in class.
