Arterial hypertension and erectile dysfunction - Review
Summary:
Erectile dysfunction is an important disorder affecting the quality of life, especially in patients with hypertension. It is estimated to affect more than 150 million people worldwide and the percentage of hypertensive patients who describe symptoms of erectile dysfunction reaches 30%.
Erectile dysfunction and high blood pressure appear to be closely intertwined conditions which, in the context of endothelium and vascular smooth muscle cell disorders, constitute a more general systemic vascular disease with overlapping risk factors. Hypertension itself also becomes an aggravating factor for erection through antihypertensive drugs, often leading to poor compliance of patients with their treatment.
Erectile dysfunction appears to be an early indicator of coronary heart disease, so diagnosis and the correct approach to sexual life represent a crucial step in the overall cardiovascular assessment of the patient. This in turn will contribute to the timely initiation of treatment preventing future complications.
Understanding the common mechanisms, involved in both the pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction and hypertension, as well as investigating antihypertensive drugs that affect sexual health will provide important tools for identifying new therapeutic goals that will serve the overall health and quality of life.
The purpose of this review is to outline the relationship between hypertension and erectile dysfunction, as well as highlight all those mechanisms involved in this pathological relationship, while at the same time reference will be made to the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of the hypertensive patient in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
