The relation between Parenting and School Adaptation and Mental Health in adolescence: A longitudinal study
Summary:
The goal of the present study was to investigate the relation between parenting, and more
specifically the parameter of the granting of autonomy by the mother, and the quality of
adaptation of Greek adolescents, cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Adaptation quality
is reflected in two indicators of mental health, depressive symptoms and behavioral
problems, and with an adequacy ratio, school adjustment. The main question of this paper
is whether the granting of autonomy by the mother is a potential predictor of adolescent
adjustment quality.
The sample were students, both male and female, of 14 High Schools in Attica. The
granting of autonomy by both parents was evaluated by the Peterson, Rollins and Thomas
(1985) Autonomy Granting Scale Parent Behavior Measure (PBM), while the Depression
Scale of Salokangas, Poutanen and Stengard (1995) was used to evaluate the depressive
symptomatology. Finally, the Potential and Difficulties Questionnaire [EJN; Strengths
and Difficulties Questionnaire [SDQ]) by Goodman, (1997). The results of this study
showed, cross-sectionally, that higher autonomy is associated with lower levels of
reported depressive symptoms and lower levels of behavioral problems. Longitudinally
granting autonomy do not affect depressive symptoms and conducting problems. In
addition, in terms of school performance, the granting of autonomy by the mother does
not seem to play an important role. Significant sex differences were observed, in favor of
girls, in terms of reporting depressive symptoms and in terms of school performance in
both years.
