Summary:
Thrace is a compound anthropological and geological area, result of excessive, complex modifications that took place in the recent and distant past. The variety and diversity of the musical sounds is a product of a continuous evolution and eternal adjustment to the historical events as well as the political and cultural processes happening in the region.
The gaida (bagpipe) used to have a dominant role in the vivid music and dance tradition of Thrace. Combined with singing, they were the two sides of the same coin when it comes to the musical life in the area. Decisive historical and cultural events marked the beginning of the end of established social structures that led to the marginalization of the gaida (bagpipe). The contribution of Giannis Ntobridis during these hard times is more than important. With origin from Thrace, with bright musical and “gaida” experiences, he supported the instrument and the relationship with it became identical. As maker and player of gaida he is one of the most established and noteworthy modern artisans of Thracian gaida.
Maker and player of musical instruments are two sides of Giannis’s life. As maker he is the most important modern manufacturer. He has experimented so much that contemporary researchers of the national musical world have remarked that he managed to “reinvent” the manufacturing of Greek gaida. As player he has left an intense musical imprint in the traditional music of Thrace. Performances, events, studio recordings as well as his presence in Anastenaria construct Giannis’s rich musical work.
