Athens Festival 2006-2015: Theatre's contribution to the transformation of Athens Festival. Athens Festival's influence in theatrical life
Summary:
Athens Festival is a multi-disciplinary cultural event that involves theatrical, musical, dance performances and visual arts. From 2006 to 2015 when Yorgos Loukos served as president of the Greek Festival – that includes Athens and Epidaurus Festivals – the festival of the Greek capital was renewed to such an extent that it marks a before and an after the assumption of his duties. Theatre played a key role to this development and this dissertation sets as its goal to answer two questions: what was the theatre’s contribution to the transformation of the festival and what was the influence of Athens festival in theatrical life.
The dissertation develops into three parts that represent the steps taken for this research. Τhe first part defines the institution of festivals, presents the major stages of its international evolution and makes a reference to the history of Athens Festival. The second part refers to the historical and social framework and the theatrical life of the period 2006-2015 by putting emphasis on the direction that the younger artistic forces were taking. It also presents the artists that participated in the Festival so as to render the atmosphere of each festival year. The third part studies the artistic and organizational choices of Yorgos Loukos, as proof of the contribution of theatre in the transformation of the institution, and it examines the influence of the festival in the theatrical life through the footprint that it left to its continuity and other cultural institutions. The research reaches the conclusion that the Athens Festival changed when Athens was turned into a European avant garde receptor and the new venues particularly the Festival’s flagship, Peiraios 260, transformed the image of the cultural organisation. Additionally, when the young audience embraced the Athens Festival and the Greek theatre delved into artistic movements, which an older generation of artists had explored, but needed a younger generation and the appropriate conditions to flourish.
