Summary:
This postgraduate thesis attempts to propose a new didactic approach to the qanun for beginners, both on a theoretical and practical level. The scope of the study is the Greek popular working class music of the interwar period and draws examples from the first audio samples recorded in Greece, the US and Turkey but also from a broader range of material from various popular music traditions throughout Greece.

The new proposal put forth under this method, involves embellishing the musical notations by including the ornaments used by a qanun player in musical phrases when executing a piece of music, considering them to be the most significant characteristic of the instrument. It also proposes a specific set of exercises illustrating the unwritten rules governing the instrument’s executional particularities with the help of separate units on each practical issue.
