Trait Emotional Intelligence and Subjective Well-Being in Adolescence
Summary:
The present study investigates the relationship between trait emotional intelligence and subjective well-being in adolescence. Also, the main points of these concepts are investigated in terms of the demographics of the sample. In this study, 147 students participated from the city of Chania, attending the second classes of High School and Junior High School. Students were assessed in terms of perceived emotional intelligence (TEIQue-ASF) (Petrides, Sangareau, Furnham, & Frederickson, 2006) and their sense of well-being (BSW/Y) (Grob et al., 1991). The results, showed a moderate to high positive correlation between trait emotional intelligence and «satisfaction», the positive factor of subjective well-being. On the contrary, a low negative correlation between trait emotional intelligence and «ill-being», the negative factor of subjective well-being, emerges. Therefore, trait emotional intelligence is found as a predictor of subjective well-being. Additional findings, as for the other factors of subjective well-being and demographics are reported. Boys and students of High School reported higher levels of trait emotional intelligence and «satisfaction». Also, there are differences in the levels of trait emotional intelligence depending on the educational level of student’s mother. Limitations and implications of the present research are discussed.
