Preterm Labor
Summary:
Pregnancy is a very important period of time in a woman’s life, from the begin-ning until the end of it. In that period of time, the changes that occur in physical level as in psychological level are really significant. There are a few times that, due to some reasons, a pregnancy can be terminated either too early or too premature.
The purpose of this paper is to make a bibliographic overview of preterm births as regards the causes/reasons, the prediction and prevention of it, based on the recent bibliographic reports and surveys.
Early childbirth is a multifactorial entity and the main problem of modern mid-wifery. The rate of preterm labors is significally raising the last decades. The causes of preterm birth are largely determinated by the racial as well as socio-economic ine-quality of women. Other factors that contribute to complexity of preterm birth are psychosocial, biological, genetic and medical, featuring that ‘disease’ complex. The effects of the processing premature labor are affecting both the pregnant woman and the fetus-newborn. Premature infants in contrast to full-term newborns, are encoun-tering increased level of mortality and morbidity, as well as a variety of health prob-lems such as developmental disability (mental retardation, brain paralysis).
Preventing premature birth is based primarily to symptomatic women, with the aim of reducing perinatal mortality and morbidity. For the most part, preterm birth detection techniques follow a specific approach. By creating therapeutic plans some-times preservative and sometimes following specific treatment, an attempt is made to sustain uterine contractions. In cases where preterm labor is caused by an infection, antibiotic treatment is given preventively.
Therefore prevention and treatment of preterm birth are of particular im-portance and weight to the perinatal outcome including the health of the woman, the newborn, always requiring a proper understanding and interdisciplinary approach to the causes and pathophysiology of these diseases.
