Emotional bond mother and infant hospitalized at neonatal intensive care unit
Summary:
Abstract
Introduction:The creation of a bond or attachment to the mother is a major developmental milestone for infants. However, so far the literature has revealed vague data on the quality of pre-infant attachment relationships and the differences between normal pregnancy and preterm infants.
Purpose of this study:The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship and emotional bond of mother-premature infant in the informal framework ofthe MENN. In addition, maternal anxiety and depression levels were investigated and whether they relate to maternal-premature infant relationship and emotional bond.
Methodology:For this purpose, a quantitative survey was carried out on a sample of 188 mothers, 100 mothers who were close to the infant from birth and then 88 mothers who had their infant hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit. Mother Bonding Infant Scale was used to record the data. Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire and HADS-Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale.
Results:Analysis of the data revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the neonates treated with M.E.N.N and the mothers who had the newborn near the maternal-neonatal commitment scale(t(162)=-2.696, p=0.008<0.05).
The x2 test showed that there was a statistically significant difference in both depression(x2(2)=28.588, p=0.000<0.05) and anxiety levels between the two groups of women(x2(2)=12.366, p=0.002<0.05).In particular, it has been observed that mothers whose newborns are hospitalized with M.E.N.N are more likely to have severe symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Conclusions:The results of the study indicate that anxiety and depression are associated with a worse mother-to-child relationship. Mother's bond with her preterm newborn hospitalized at M.E.N.N is less developed than the bond that develops between the mother and her full-term offspring.
