Summary:
The aim of the present work is to investigate the ways of integrating the fortifications, as previous boundaries of the city, in the modern urban fabric. The methodology that will be followed includes the presentation of historical and archaeological data through bibliographic references, the search and critique of previous interventions and studies, the research of relevant examples of fortification monuments and finally the preferment proposal applicated in the city of Nafplio.
Specifically, the proposal will concern the fortification complex that includes the city, Akronafplia, Palamidi and Bourtzi with a combined preferment of the monuments. The proposal, in addition to the protection of monuments, aims at activating the fortification monuments and their function as a public space, in order to be attributed to the modern urban environment in a dialectical way, with the participation of the public in the design process, towards a comprehensive approach and implementation of proposals that are easily reversible and will accompany the evolution of the modern urban fabric.
