Aspects and representations of the child - adolescent in historical novels and short stories for children and young people, referring to the 1940 - 1944 period
Summary:
In the present paper the aspects and the social representations of the child, from primary school age up to adolescence, are examined, as they are presented through novels and short stories for children and young people, having the period of German Occupation (1941-1944) as reference framework.
Firstly the historical events that took place before, during, and after the end of World War II in Europe and especially in the Greek territory are reported in details. The political developments in Greece, its involvement in the war, its financial and social environment, the food confiscation and the raw materials blockade by the Germans that led to the horrendous wretchedness of the civilians, as well as the Greek Resistance, are presented with clarity. In addition the consequences of war and the losses in both war fronts are evaluated.
Additionally, a genre classification of the primary sources is attempted and their historicity compared to myth-making is commented on. The traces of history that establish these texts as historical are examined and classified.
The historical memory and the formation of historical consciousness and national identity through literature texts to readers, children and adolescents, are researched. Furthermore, the wound of history and the way it is rendered through literature are examined.
The paper is completed with the drawing of conclusions and the presentation of selective bibliography of literature texts about children and young people, having the German Occupation as reference framework.
