The "competitiveness" of the students Peter and John in the Gospel of John through the prism of organizational behavior and management
Summary:
Conflicts in the functional framework of a group and of the social interactions among its members are inevitable. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the presence of “Competition” in the relationship between the two disciples, Peter and the “Beloved Disciple”, into John’s Gospel and more specifically into the passages of John 20:1-10 & John 21:15-23, with the interdisciplinary assistance of Organizational Behavior and Management. Also, it will be considered under which causes a conflict context may be provoked and even more, the effects of the conflicts. The chosen scientific methodology in this study is the bibliographic review regarding conflicts under the view of Organizational Behavior, but also from the perspective of Patristic or Ecclesiastical Theology. Additionally, for the scientific approach of the Bible texts, the historical and contemporary method of interpretation was followed. The conclusions showed that in the first passage of John 20:1-10 we have documented most of the conflict’s causes. Conflict is functional at such a level that does not create stagnation, while creativity is stimulated, tension is relieved, productivity is increasing and new circumstances are created focusing on change and new data. The result of this functional conflict is unifying and not dissolving not only for these two disciples but also for the other disciples, too. Both disciples work together in a win-win situation. The conflict between the two students focuses on the task conflict rather than on the relationship conflict. In John 21:15-23 seems that there is some conflict in the process logistics of work. But Christ as a true Leader who has a nodal and a visual intervention prevents further competitiveness and even in this case the conflict is not evolving into conflict of relations.
