Summary:
This postgraduate diploma thesis studies the importance of images as tools in the teaching of History in Secondary Education through the perspective of political cartoons. Initially, the first samples of caricature from antiquity and its evolution in the field of political cartoon in modern times are examined through a review of the history of the Greek, satirical press. Then, emphasis is placed on describing, analyzing, and interpreting political cartoons and, consequently, using them as primary resources of history. Afterwards, there are presented two teaching examples based on the most important political, social and economic events from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, utilizing the political cartoons of the press of the time. In conclusion, there is an overview of the benefits of teaching the subject of History through the use of images in general, and political cartoons in particular.
