Eustathios of Thessalonike, What would monk Neophytos, the bishop of Mokissos, say, when during his bath the day after the death of the holy patriarch sir Michael of Anchialos, who had greatly benefited him, envoys of Pantechnes, the megas oikonomos, stole his mattress, his clothes and everything else that he had left out of the bath chamber and wittily distributed them to the paupers right away. Summary:
The subject of the present thesis is the only surviving ethopoiia of Eustathios of Thessalonike. The text was published for the first time in 1832 by Tafel in the work Eustathii, metropolitae thessalonicensis, Opuscula. However, in that edition the scholar used only one of the two manuscripts that contain the text, codex Parisinus gr. 1182. For the composition of my text I read both the manuscript of Paris and the second manuscript that contains the ethopoiia, Scorialensis Y II 10, I compared them and carried out the first critical edition of this rhetorical work of Eustathios. The text is also translated and commented on for the first time in Greek (and in general, since it had not been studied in any language so far), while it is preceded by a presentation of the life of the author, where a solution of issues related to the dating of focal points of his life is attempted, a list of his works, and extensive information about the ethopoiia, its place in the work of the bishop of Thessalonike and the innovations that he is introducing in this popular text genre, and followed by a supplement, where his views against monks that exist in his corresponding works are presented in detail.
